Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has revealed a special new visual marking the third anniversary of the anime’s first broadcast. The artwork was unveiled during a Season 2 screening event attended by the main voice cast, and the official account used the moment to remind fans that Season 3 is now about one year away.
Season 3 is scheduled to premiere in October 2027 and will adapt the Golden Land Arc of the manga.
What the anniversary visual shows
The new artwork depicts Frieren, Fern and Stark celebrating together around what the series’ own description calls a “ridiculously huge hamburger,” with the original Hero Party — Himmel, Eisen and Heiter — reflected in the window behind them. It is a composition that nods to the story’s central tension: the long-lived elf at the center of the party, and the human companions whose time moves so much faster.
The visual follows the Season 3 teaser, which was released in March 2026 and featured Macht, the strongest member of the Demon King’s Seven Sages of Destruction — a character at the heart of the Golden Land Arc.
Where the anime stands
The adaptation is produced by Studio MADHOUSE, which animated both seasons released so far. Its key staff has shifted between seasons:
- Season 1: directed by Keiichiro Saito, premiered September 29, 2023, and ran for 28 episodes
- Season 2: directed by Tomoya Kitagawa, premiered in January 2026 and ran for 10 episodes, covering the Divine Revolte Arc
- Series composition: Tomohiro Suzuki
- Character design: Reiko Nagasawa (Season 1), with Yuri Fujinaka, Keisuke Kojima and Maru Takase credited on later work
- Music: Evan Call
The main cast includes Atsumi Tanezaki as Frieren, Kana Ichinose as Fern, Chiaki Kobayashi as Stark, Nobuhiko Okamoto as Himmel, Yoji Ueda as Eisen and Hiroki Tochi as Heiter. Crunchyroll streams the series outside Japan.
The manga behind it
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is written by Kanehito Yamada with illustrations by Tsukasa Abe. It has been serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday since April 2020 and is available in English through Viz Media, alongside the Japanese Sunday Webry and Shogakukan Comic services.
The series follows Frieren, an elven mage, after the hero’s party defeats the Demon King and disbands. Where most fantasy stories stop at the victory, Frieren is built around what comes afterward — the decades the near-immortal protagonist spends retracing her old companions’ lives and coming to understand the human relationships she let pass by.
Why it matters
The anniversary itself is a promotional beat, but it carries real information for anyone tracking the series: Season 3 is on schedule for October 2027, and the Golden Land Arc is confirmed as its adaptation target. Because so much of Frieren’s appeal comes from its slow, patient pacing and the weight of the source material’s long stretches of time, knowing which arc comes next tells readers roughly how far ahead the anime is relative to the manga.
The anniversary visual is also a reminder of how the adaptation’s identity has been tied to its seasonal imagery — the Hero Party, the passage of time, and the quiet contrast between Frieren’s perspective and everyone around her. With Season 3 a year out, the franchise’s near-term activity sits in events, merchandise and re-screenings rather than new episodes. Season 2 screening events are being held at nine theaters in Japan, with a stage greeting at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya in Tokyo; attendees at all locations receive commemorative postcards, one of which features character designer Maru Takase’s illustration of Macht.
Frieren remains one of the biggest fantasy titles in the current anime landscape, and its next season will arrive in a crowded field — the sort of lineup tracked in our Fall 2026 most-anticipated rankings, which already include similarly adaptation-driven series such as The Apothecary Diaries Season 3.
