Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files is heading to television in April 2027. The “Dengeki Bunko Fall Festival Online 2026” presented the first full promotional video for the anime of En Mikami’s novel series on Saturday, October 3, confirming the premiere window and announcing more cast and staff members.
The anime was previously announced, but the festival gave the project its most concrete update yet: a full trailer, a broadcast month and a substantially expanded roster of people attached to it.
Cast
Riko Akechi voices Shioriko Shinokawa and Shunsuke Takeuchi voices Daisuke Gōra. The newly announced cast members are Reo Osanai as Ayaka Shinokawa, Wataru Takagi as Shida, Yōhei Azakami as Kikuya Kasai and Saeko Kamijō as Nao Kosuga.
Staff
Mamoru Kanbe (SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary, Sound of the Sky, The Perfect Insider) is directing at CloverWorks, with Ayako Kurata as assistant director and Kento Matsui as director assistant. Toshiya Ono, who worked with Kanbe on SHOSHIMIN and The Perfect Insider, is handling series scripts.
Jun Nakai (NieR:Automata Ver1.1a, Silver Spoon, Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files: Rail Zeppelin Grace note) is designing the characters and also serving as chief animation director. Takahiro Obata is composing the music.
The wider crew includes prop design by Manami Fukuyo, art direction by Masatoshi Kai, art setting by Yoshinori Shiozawa, color key art by Kazuko Nakashima, compositing photography direction by Teruyuki Kawase of T2 Studio, cinematography supervision by Tomoyuki Shiokawa, also of T2 Studio, CG direction by Tatsuhiro Itō, editing by Rie Matsubara, and sound direction by Tomohiko Yaginuma with sound effects by Shōta Yaso.
The novels behind the anime
Mikami launched the series in 2011 with the novel Shioriko-san to Kimyō na Kyakujin-tachi (Shioriko and the Strange Guests), illustrated by Hagu Koshijima. The books have sold over 6.4 million copies and were nominated for the Japan Mystery Writers Association Award’s long-story category in both 2012 and 2014. The 11th novel shipped in March 2024.
The novel line is divided into two “series,” with the first concluding at its seventh novel and the current run forming the second. There have also been three manga adaptations. The first, by Nakano, debuted in Kadokawa’s Altima Ace magazine before moving to Asuka in 2013 and ending in 2014 with six volumes. A second, by Ryō Kōda, launched in Kodansha’s Good! Afternoon magazine in 2012 and reached three volumes. A third, by Haruki Niwa, titled Biblia Koshodō no Jiken Techō – Tobirako to Utsuro na Yume, ran on Kadokawa’s Young Ace Up website from February 2024 to October 2025 and shipped its third volume in November 2025.
The story has been adapted before. A live-action television series aired in 2013, and Crunchyroll began streaming that version in 2014. Crunchyroll describes the premise this way: Shioriko is the proprietor of the Biblia Antiquarian Bookshop, an expert on vintage books and a formidable logical thinker who can solve mysteries from the smallest clues, aided by her lanky assistant and protector Gōra Daisuke, who cannot read for long without getting dizzy.
The path to this anime was not straightforward. Kadokawa announced in 2017 that the books would inspire both a live-action film and an anime film. The live-action film opened in November 2018, but the anime film project was never released and no further information about it was ever revealed — making the television adaptation announced years later effectively a restart of those plans.
Why it matters
This is a rare case of an anime adapting a mystery series directly rather than through an action or fantasy lens, and the staff choice reflects that. Kanbe has spent recent years on exactly this kind of quiet, character-driven puzzle material in SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary, and pairing him with Ono again suggests the production wants a measured, dialogue-led adaptation rather than a faster, more sensational one.
CloverWorks is another reason the project stands out. The studio has had a strong recent run across both original films and adaptations, and a bookshop mystery gives it material that lives or dies on atmosphere and performance rather than spectacle. With six light novel volumes behind it and a proven live-action version, the show already has an audience to draw on when it arrives in April 2027.
