Overlord [Shin] Sekai-hen Manga Goes on Hiatus After Artist Matsuki’s Hospitalization

Overlord’s newest manga has hit a pause, and the reason is the artist’s health. Matsuki said on X/Twitter on Wednesday that they have been hospitalized and need to rest and recover, so their Overlord [Shin] Sekai-hen manga is going on hiatus.

No return date has been given yet.

The series, known in English as Overlord: The New World Arc, is a sequel manga. Matsuki launched it in Kadokawa’s Comp Ace magazine in April 2024, and Kadokawa published the fourth collected volume on March 26. It picks up the story from Hugin Miyama and Satoshi Ōshio’s Overlord manga adaptation, resuming in the middle of that series’ 10th volume, at the point where Ainz wins the battle on the Katze Plains and founds a magical nation.

That origin matters for anyone trying to place the series. [Shin] Sekai-hen is not a reboot and not a retelling. It continues a story that was already drawn once, which is an unusual move for a franchise still publishing its source novels.

Where the sequel fits in the Overlord timeline

Overlord began as Kugane Maruyama’s light novel series, which he started posting online in 2010. Kadokawa’s Enterbrain imprint put it into print with illustrations by so-bin in 2012, and the novels reached their 16th volume in July 2022. Yen Press handles the English releases, and the novel series is set to finish with volume 18.

The first manga adaptation came from Miyama and Ōshio, who launched it in Comp Ace in 2014. That version ended its first part in May 2023, and Kadokawa released the 19th volume that December. Yen Press brought out the same volume in English in October 2024.

So [Shin] Sekai-hen is a continuation, not a fresh start. Readers who only know the franchise from the anime will find it picks up well past where the fourth season left off.

An anime that kept the franchise visible

Overlord IV premiered in July 2022. Crunchyroll streamed it as it aired and later added an English dub. The franchise then moved to theaters: Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom opened in Japan in September 2024, and Crunchyroll screened it in North America that November, followed by releases across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

That film is the most recent animated Overlord release. A fifth season has not been announced.

Why it matters

Health breaks have become a regular part of manga serialization, and the sheer number of them lately is hard to miss. Chained Soldier went on hiatus over artist Yohei Takemura’s health, and Tune In to the Midnight Heart paused for a week while its creator recovered. Hunter x Hunter’s Yoshihiro Togashi has also said he will limit his output over his physical and mental health.

For [Shin] Sekai-hen, the effect is simple. If the pause runs long, future volumes will slip. Kadokawa has not said whether the hiatus will change the release schedule.

The franchise itself is fine. The light novels are near their planned ending, the anime film is already out, and the manga sequel has four volumes in print. This is a delay, not a cancellation. That distinction is easy to lose when news like this lands, but it is the accurate one. Readers waiting on the fifth volume have the fourth to catch up on in the meantime.
