Nue’s Exorcist is getting an anime. The Jump Press livestream on Monday announced that Kōta Kawae’s manga, sold in English as Nue’s Exorcist (Nue no Onmyōji), will get a television adaptation that debuts in summer 2027 on TV Asahi. The stream also showed a teaser video and a teaser visual, and named the main cast and main staff.
Who is making the Nue’s Exorcist anime
Studio Hibari is handling animation. Hiroyuki Hashimoto is directing. His past work includes Classroom of the Elite, Laidbackers and Magical Girl Raising Project. Hiroshi Seko is writing the series scripts, with credits that include Dorohedoro and DAN DA DAN. Shunpei Mochizuki (Sakugan) is designing the characters. Takayuki Yamaguchi (Laidbackers, Dead Mount Death Play, Classroom for Heroes) is the sound director, and MONACA (NieR:Automata Ver 1.1a) is composing the music.
Three voice actors were announced: Kaito Miura as Gakuro Yajima, Saori Ōnishi as the spirit Nue, and Sayumi Suzushiro rounding out the main trio. More cast members are still to come, and the official site is already teasing several other characters without actors attached yet.
What the Nue’s Exorcist manga is about
Gakuro Yajima can see spirits, and he has spent his whole life trying to avoid them. Then he opens a sealed room at his school and meets Nue, a spirit who has waited sixty years for someone to find her. She talks him into fighting the evil spirits roaming the campus. Nue is a pop-culture fan, which is the kind of odd detail that tells you what kind of series this is.
The manga launched in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 2023. Shueisha shipped the 16th compiled volume on September 4, and Viz Media released the eighth volume in English on September 1. Viz puts out the series both digitally and in print, and Shueisha’s MANGA Plus service carries it digitally, so readers outside Japan can keep up between volumes.
Why the anime announcement matters
Nue’s Exorcist is no stranger to attention. It topped AnimeJapan 2025’s “Manga We Want to See Animated” poll, a reader vote that is one of the clearest signals a publisher gets about demand. Winners of that poll do not always get adapted, but the result made an anime a matter of when.
The staff list is the interesting part. Hiroshi Seko has become one of the busiest composition writers in the industry, and MONACA’s involvement points to a soundtrack that gets real attention. Studio Hibari is not one of the giant names in TV anime, but Hashimoto has directed both comedy and action across his career, and Nue’s Exorcist needs someone who can switch between the two without losing the tone. Mochizuki’s character work on Sakugan is a reasonable indicator of what the designs will look like.
Summer 2027 is still a long way off, and TV Asahi is a mainstream broadcast slot rather than late night. For a Jump title that has been building for three years, that placement is a vote of confidence. Expect the full cast and a proper trailer before the premiere, likely with a concrete date somewhere in the spring.
Adaptations like this one rarely arrive alone. It joins the same wave as the Manchuria Opium Squad manga adaptation and the Where Is the Elf Teacher’s Toilet? TV anime, two more manga that took the same path from print to screen.
