Happy Kanako’s Killer Life is getting a TV anime. TOHO animation announced on Saturday that Toshiya Wakabayashi’s manga will premiere next April, with Shinji Takamatsu directing at Studio Drive.
The announcement came one day after TOHO animation posted a picture of otters with the words “Otter Agent” and promised a new TV anime reveal. That teaser was strange enough that most people guessed wrong.
Who’s making it
Takamatsu is also handling the series composition, so the comedy timing sits with the person who spent years on Gintama. Yoshiyuki Okubo is designing the characters and serving as chief animation director. Studio Drive is producing.
The main cast is set. Hana Tamegai voices Kanako Nishino, Ryota Suzuki plays her coworker Sakurai, and Junichi Suwabe is the company president. A teaser visual went out with the announcement.
What the story is
The premise explains why the otter artwork existed at all. Kanako quits a job she hates and grabs the first opening she finds, which turns out to be at an agency of contract killers. She assumes she is useless at it. She is not. Within a short time she discovers a genuine talent for assassination, which is a complicated thing to be good at.
Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the manga in English, and its own description leans hard into the comedy: Kanako has little confidence, a new job she is oddly suited for, and a prickly coworker she would like to impress. The series is full color, which is unusual for a gag manga and part of why it stands out on a shelf.
Where the manga stands
Wakabayashi started Happy Kanako’s Killer Life as a four-panel web manga on Twitter and his pixivFANBOX account. Seikaisha later picked it up for serialization on its Twi4 service. Seikaisha published the ninth collected volume on May 27. Seven Seas released the eighth English volume on July 28, so the gap between the Japanese and English releases is roughly a year and closing.
The manga already has a live-action version. A series debuted on DMM TV in February 2025, and a second season arrived on the same service on September 17. That is a quick turnaround for a property that started as web comics posted to a personal account.
Wakabayashi is not a newcomer to adaptation. His earlier manga Tsuredure Children ran online from October 2012, moved into Weekly Shonen Magazine with new material in 2015, and ended in July 2018. It got a TV anime in July 2017, streamed by Crunchyroll with subtitles and by Funimation with a dub. That show was a short-form anthology of school romances, and its structure is a fair indication of how Wakabayashi builds jokes.
Why April 2027 matters
April 2027 is starting to look crowded. The spring season already has Walking Home with You locked for an April TV debut, and TOHO animation has Phantom Busters set for 2027 as well. A comedy with a director who knows how to land a punchline is a different flavor from the fantasy and romance titles stacking up around it.
The question now is format. The manga is four-panel, and four-panel manga usually becomes either a short-form series or a half-length one. Neither TOHO animation nor Studio Drive has said which, and episode count has not been announced. That detail will shape how the adaptation reads more than any casting choice.
There is also the tone problem any assassin comedy runs into. The manga plays the killings for laughs and keeps the violence stylized, and the anime will have to decide how far to push that. Takamatsu has handled violent comedy before, so the material is in reasonable hands.
No streaming partner has been announced for the series outside Japan.
