Kaiju Decode is back, and this time it has a title, a teaser and a year. The official website for the Tsuburaya Productions and Toei Animation CG project posted a teaser trailer and a new teaser visual on Sunday, along with a 2027 debut window for Kaiju Decode: The Ring of Aidara (Kaiju Decode: Aidara no Yubiwa).
The setting is Sakai in Osaka Prefecture. That is a real place with real geography, and the project has been built around the idea of putting giant monsters into ordinary Japanese city streets rather than the usual flattened Tokyo skyline.
The people behind it
Katsuie Shibata, who wrote Hitchhiker's Guide to the Isekai, is handling the screenplay. Masayuki Gotou (SSSS.Dynazenon) designs the monsters.
The character designers are the interesting part of the lineup. Sei Nakashima, a Hollywood CG art director whose credits include concept work on the first Harry Potter film, designs Maru. Masatsugu Saitō (Cyborg 009 Call of Justice) designs Coco. JNTHED, who has done design work on Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, illustrated the teaser visual.
Producers are Kōichi Noguchi, whose credits include Expelled from Paradise and KADO – The Right Answer, and Masahiro Onda, a Tsuburaya veteran who worked on Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial and served as executive producer on SSSS.Gridman.
The stated theme is "a story about kaiju and girls," and both studios have said they are aiming the project at a worldwide audience rather than a domestic one. That framing fits the current market. Tsuburaya has spent the past decade turning Ultraman into an international streaming property, and Toei has been steadily exporting its catalog through Crunchyroll.
What came before
Kaiju Decode is not a new idea so much as a returning one. A full anime short streamed in December 2021 on the Tsuburaya Imagination website, and on the same day the companies released a VR anime short called Kaiju Decode: First Contact for Oculus Quest. Both are listed as the "first part" of the overall project, which means The Ring of Aidara is a continuation of something that started five years ago and then went quiet.
That 2021 short came from a different team on the production side. S/N directed at Arect, Tetsuya Yamada wrote the script and Tadahiko Inoue composed the music. The cast was Nobunaga Shimazaki as Rei, Marika Kōno as Miru, Mayumi Shintani as Zora and Aya Yamane as Real Rei. The 2027 production has its own staff list, and the site has not said whether any of the earlier cast return.
Why the wait makes sense
CG anime at this scale is slow. A project that starts as a VR short and a web special, then moves to a theatrical-scale production with Hollywood concept designers attached, is a project that spent several years finding its budget. Tsuburaya and Toei both have the infrastructure to do it now. Tsuburaya brings the kaiju vocabulary, Toei brings animation production capacity, and the pair have been circling a co-production of this type for a while.
The teaser visual, drawn by JNTHED, is the only image released so far, and it does not show a finished character model. A full trailer will have to do the heavy lifting on what the CG actually looks like. A 2027 date with no month attached means the schedule is still soft.
The takeaway
If you liked SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon, this has two of the same names on it: Gotou on monster design and Onda as producer. That combination suggests a show that treats kaiju as characters rather than scenery, which is the thing that made the Gridman project work. It also suggests the girls will get actual personalities instead of being set dressing, and the "kaiju and girls" theme is doing that work openly.
