Chizuna Nakajima’s comedy manga Elf-Sensei no Toire wa Doko Desu ka? — known in English as Where Is the Elf Teacher’s Toilet? — is getting a television anime adaptation. The announcement landed on Friday alongside a commemorative illustration drawn by Nakajima to mark the news.
No studio, cast, release window or episode format has been confirmed yet, so the project is still at its earliest stage. What is clear is that the manga, a niche comedy published by Kadokawa, has done enough to earn a screen adaptation after two and a half years in print.
What the series is about
The premise is exactly as specific as the title suggests. Eruru is an elf who has travelled from another world to complete her teaching practicum at an all-boys school. There is one complication: elven rules dictate that she can only relieve herself somewhere with abundant nature, which is not a description that fits a modern school campus.
MyAnimeList frames it as a “heart-pounding, suspense-filled fantasy comedy about needing to use the bathroom,” and that is a fair summary. The humour leans on the gap between Eruru’s dignified position as a trainee teacher and the very mundane problem she cannot escape.
Manga status and publication history
Nakajima launched the manga in Kadokawa’s Comic Cune magazine in January 2024. Kadokawa published the first compiled volume in July 2024 and the second in February 2025. The series went on hiatus in January 2025 and is scheduled to resume serialization on September 26 — the day after the anime announcement — which suggests the return and the adaptation were timed together.
Two volumes is a young catalogue for an anime green light, but Comic Cune titles are short-form by design, and adaptations of newer series have become more common as production committees look for cheaper, lower-risk projects.
Who is behind it
Reports differ slightly on which company is leading the adaptation. Anime News Network credits Kadokawa, which publishes the manga. MyAnimeList attributes the announcement to WWWave Corporation’s Deregula animation label. Deregula is a brand associated with short-form anime, though nothing about the length or format of this adaptation has been announced officially.
Nakajima is not a newcomer. She launched Jitensha no Onee-san (The Bicycle Lady) in Comic Cune in September 2019 and ended it in September 2020, with Kadokawa publishing two volumes. Earlier still, her comedy Angel’s Drop (Tenshi no Drop) debuted on Holp Shuppan’s Flex Comix Blood site in 2011. When Flex Comix Blood shut down a year later, the manga moved to the Comic Meteor website and ran until December 2013. That series also inspired a television anime special, directed by Kōji Itō at AIC Frontier, in 2013.
Why it matters
Small comedies built on a single absurd premise are having a moment, and this one has a hook that is easy to explain in a sentence — which is exactly what an adaptation needs. The bigger question is format. If Deregula is indeed the label behind it, the show may run as a short-form series rather than a full-length one, and that changes who ends up watching it.
For now, the honest answer is that almost everything beyond the adaptation itself is still unknown. Fans of the manga get confirmation that the story is continuing past its hiatus and is heading to screens; everyone else gets a title that is hard to forget.
