Bocchi the Rock! Movie: Hoshi no Ashiato Prequel Film Opens in 2027

The Bocchi the Rock! anime is getting a film before it gets its second season. The official site announced Bocchi the Rock! Movie: Hoshi no Ashiato on Sunday, a 2027 theatrical release in Japan that hands the spotlight to Nijika’s older sister, Seika.

Maaya Uchida returns as Seika Ijichi and Sayumi Suzushiro returns as Nijika Ijichi. Both are reprising roles from the TV series, which is the first useful sign that this is not a spin-off with a new cast bolted onto it.

What the film is actually about

The official description is short. The movie follows Seika, and it tells a story about dreams that begin with the Ijichi sisters being separated ten years before the events of the TV anime. So: prequel, not sequel, and not a compilation job either.

That is a strange place for a franchise to go when it still has an announced second season sitting in limbo. But it also means the film can exist without touching anything the TV staff has to protect. More on that below.

For anyone who only remembers Seika as the sharp-tongued manager of Starry, this is the stretch of her life the show skipped entirely. Nijika’s reason for starting a band in the first place lives in that gap, and the prequel is going to sit right on top of it.

The staff is where the real story is

Shin Wakabayashi directs at CloverWorks. That is a deliberate pick. His work on Wonder Egg Priority was visually restless in a way that suits a music series with a habit of breaking its own visual rules.

Erika Yoshida writes the script. Yukiko Horiguchi, who did character design for K-On!, is doing character design here. The rest of the credits read like a list of people who have been around big productions: Kazuko Nakashima on colour design, Yuuki Funao as art director, Yuuya Sakuma as director of photography, Daisuke Hiraki editing, Akiko Fujita as sound director, Hiroaki Iriyama as stylist and Yuto Hama on graphic design. ANIMEC distributes. CloverWorks has plenty else on its plate as well, with Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files due in April 2027.

A teaser visual and an announcement promo went out with the announcement.

Season 2 is still out there

Bocchi the Rock! season 2 was announced in February 2025, during the Kessoku Band ZEPP TOUR 2024 “We will” run. Yusuke Yamamoto, who was assistant director on season one, took over directing from Keiichiro Saito. No date has been announced since.

So the franchise now has two projects in flight and the prequel arrives first, ahead of a season announced nearly two years ago. Fans clocked that ordering within minutes of the news going up.

Honestly, it makes sense from a production standpoint. A prequel costs nothing in continuity terms. It can be built while the TV team is still assembling, it gives the brand a theatrical event in the meantime, and it does not force anyone to rush a season that has to land properly. The alternative, waiting quietly until 2027 or 2028 with nothing in cinemas, is worse for a series this merchandised.

The first season ran 12 episodes in fall 2022 and Crunchyroll simulcast it. A two-part compilation film followed in June and August 2024, which is how the franchise kept the lights on during the gap.

The manga behind it

Aki Hamaji’s four-panel manga has run in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara MAX since December 2017. It went on hiatus in January because of the author’s health and resumed serialization on June 18. The eighth volume came out in November 2025.

Yen Press licensed the manga in English in April 2023 and released volume seven in October 2025, with volume eight scheduled for November 24.

A prequel about the Ijichi sisters is a good fit for that material. Hamaji’s manga is generous with its supporting cast, and Seika in particular has always read like a character with a backstory the anime never had room for. A film is the obvious place to spend it.

The date is 2027, in Japanese theatres. Nothing has been said about international release yet.
