Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki is coming to an end after a decade. Author Yuki Yaku announced on his X account that the light novel series will conclude with its 12th volume, which releases on October 16.
Shogakukan has published the series under its Gagaga Bunko imprint since May 2016, with Fly illustrating. The final arc, or “last stage,” began with the 11th volume in March 2023, so the ending has been built toward across three years of releases.
What the series is about
The story centers on Fumiya Tomozaki, a high school student who sits at the top of the leaderboards in the online game Attack Families under the handle “nanashi,” yet has almost no social skills in real life. When the game’s second-best player asks to meet offline, Tomozaki discovers that it is Aoi Hinami — his “perfect” and popular classmate. Unlike him, she treats life itself as a game worth mastering, and she offers him cheat-level advice for navigating it.
That setup — a top gamer being coached through ordinary social life — gave the series its hook, and it stayed a romantic comedy driven by self-improvement rather than wish fulfillment. It also spun off a side story, Minami Nanami Wants to Shine, focused on one of the supporting characters.
An anime and a growing English readership
The light novel inspired a television anime produced by Project No.9 that aired from January to March 2021, with a second season, 2nd Stage, following from January to March 2024. Yen Press has licensed the novels for North America, publishing the first English volume in July 2019.
That combination is part of why the ending registers beyond the novel’s core readership. The anime introduced the premise to a much wider audience, and the English release built a second following that is now arriving at the same conclusion as Japanese readers.
Why it matters
Twelve volumes over a decade is a modest total by light novel standards, but the pacing was deliberate. The series had released 11 volumes as of January 2024 and flagged its final arc three years before the ending, giving readers a clear runway instead of a late announcement. That kind of notice is not the norm in a format where conclusions often arrive with little warning.
Light novel endings tell you something about the health of the format. A series that launched in 2016 and reaches a planned, announced conclusion is a sign of a run that was allowed to finish on its own terms rather than being cut short by sales. For a genre that often ends abruptly or trails off, that is worth noting.
The finale also caps one of the more unusual premises in the slice-of-life space: less a fantasy of sudden popularity than a procedural about learning to decode people. Ending on volume 12 gives Yaku room to land the arc that began with volume 11 rather than stretching it.
The light novel joins a busy stretch of endings and finales. My Tiny Senpai will end with its 14th volume in April 2027, and the Kuri Hime Ayakashi Yobanashi manga ends on October 28.
The 12th and final volume of Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki arrives on October 16.
