Future GPX Cyber Formula is returning to theaters, and it is bringing a brand-new short with it. Bandai Namco Filmworks announced on September 26 that its planned new anime short will screen alongside a new HD-remastered “movie edition” of the Future GPX Cyber Formula: Early Days Renewal compilation OVA in Japan starting February 19, 2027.
The short is titled Shin Seiki GPX Cyber Formula ASURADA and is a direct sequel to the 1998 OVA Future GPX Cyber Formula Sin.
Hand-drawn, no CG
According to the staff, the upcoming short uses hand-drawn animation and no CG — a deliberate choice for a racing series whose appeal has always been bound up in how its machines move. Character designer Hirokazu Hisayuki and chief mechanical animation director Satoshi Shigeta drew the poster for the short.
Series director Mitsuo Fukuda is overseeing the new “movie edition” of Early Days Renewal.

New machines
Shōji Kawamori designed the previously revealed, completely new Cyber Machine “Zenith Asurada AKF-S0/G” for the short. Bandai Namco Filmworks also revealed Kawamori’s design for the “Hō・Ōga AA-1” machine, though the romanization of that name is not confirmed. Four stills from the new anime short were released as well.
The series behind the return
The original Future GPX Cyber Formula television anime aired in Japan in 1991 and spawned four OVA sequels: Future GPX Cyber Formula 11 in 1992, Zero in 1994, Saga in 1996 and Sin in 1998. A compilation OVA, Future GPX Cyber Formula: Early Days Renewal, debuted in 1996 — and that is the collection now being remastered for this theatrical run.
The premise follows Kazami Hayato, who becomes bonded to Team Sugo’s Asurada GSX race car and has to prove himself in a futuristic Grand Prix where driving skill and machine technology decide races. A new game, Future GPX Cyber Formula Spiral, is also in the works, featuring an original storyline supervised by series general director Mitsuo Fukuda.
Why it matters
This is a franchise that has been largely dormant on screen since the late 1990s, so a new animated short — let alone one billed as a direct sequel to Sin — is a significant revival rather than a simple re-release. Pairing it with the HD-remastered Early Days Renewal movie edition also gives newcomers a way in: the compilation covers the early story, while the short picks up the thread decades later.
