Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Prequel Reveals Trailer and 2027 Theatrical Dates

Bandai Namco Filmworks has shown the first proper trailer for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, the prequel to the 2024 film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. The trailer confirms the release plan: the film opens in Japanese theaters on January 15, with a North American release following in February 2027.

The prequel is not a fresh production built from scratch. Director Mitsuo Fukuda told the audience at a stage greeting that the script was finished about 20 years ago, and that the storyboards are nearly half done. Some of those storyboards predate the ones for SEED FREEDOM itself, and dialogue recording has already been completed.

A long-delayed project

Screenwriters Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita wrote the scenario while the staff was planning Gundam SEED FREEDOM itself. Fukuda also said the prequel was originally meant to be an original video anime two decades ago, though the team has not settled on how it will be released now. Calling it a “film” may still be an assumption, given how much has changed since it was first put together.

Fukuda, producer Hisakazu Naka, and Sōichirō Hoshi, the voice of Kira Yamato, appeared at the first screening to announce the project. Several cast members are returning, and the English dub brings back Matthew Erickson as Shinn Asuka, Matt Hill as Kira Yamato, and Sam Vincent as Athrun Zala.

There is a related streaming note. The Gundam Channel International account is now running the English dub of the original Mobile Suit Gundam SEED on YouTube, with Gundam SEED Destiny set to follow at some point.

Where the last film landed

Context helps explain the interest. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM opened in Japan in January 2024 and debuted at number one at the Japanese box office. It sold 634,182 tickets for 1,065,983,130 yen, about US$7.20 million, over its first three days. That was the Gundam franchise’s biggest three-day opening by earnings, and the film went on to become the highest-earning Gundam film in Japan.

Bandai Namco Filmworks and Fathom Events screened it in the United States and Canada in May 2024, and Netflix later picked it up for streaming. Special editions played in Japanese theaters in the fall of 2024, one with extra footage added to the end and another with a different cut.

Fukuda directed the 2024 film at Bandai Namco Filmworks and co-wrote it with his late wife Chiaki Morosawa and Liu Goto. Hisashi Hirai, who designed the characters for the original Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, handled character designs.

Why the prequel matters

A prequel that uses material written two decades ago is an unusual thing to finally make. It suggests the story was always part of the plan for the SEED revival and was simply held back until the franchise had room for it. For longtime fans, that also means the film should slot cleanly into the established timeline rather than feeling like an afterthought.

The release dates give SEED viewers something concrete to plan around: Japan in January, North America the following month. What remains open is the international rollout beyond North America, which has not been detailed yet.
