Viz Media has unveiled a new teaser trailer, a fresh key visual and the main cast for the anime adaptation of Keigo Shinzō’s Hirayasumi manga. The announcement arrived on September 28 and confirms a January 2027 premiere in Japan on the NHK General channel.
The series is a co-production between Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions and Production +h. Viz also announced an English release window of 2027, meaning the show is being set up for a simultaneous-ish rollout rather than a later overseas drop.

The world premiere is in New York
Before the Japanese broadcast, Viz Media and the Japan Society will host the world premiere screening of the first episode at the Japan Society in New York City on October 7 at 7:00 p.m. EDT. Composer Kaori Sawada and producer Junichi Katsutani are set to attend, with Viz Media’s community manager Godswill Ugwa hosting the panel.
That is a deliberate choice of venue. Hirayasumi is a slice-of-life series set around everyday relationships rather than spectacle, and giving its first episode a literary-institution premiere in New York signals the kind of audience the adaptation is aiming for.
What the manga is
Shinzō launched Hirayasumi in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine in April 2021. Shogakukan published the manga’s ninth compiled volume on July 30, and the series has over 1.1 million copies in circulation worldwide.
Its reputation was built steadily rather than instantly. The manga was nominated for the 15th Manga Taisho awards in January 2022, ranked #18 in the 2023 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook, was nominated for the 27th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in February 2023, and was nominated for Best Continuing Manga Series at the 2nd American Manga Awards.
The story has already proven it works outside its original format. A live-action series adaptation premiered on NHK in November 2025 — the same broadcaster that will now carry the anime, which is a notable vote of confidence in the property from the network.
Why it matters
Hirayasumi is exactly the kind of manga that benefits from a careful adaptation. Its appeal is quiet observation and character work, not plot mechanics, so the anime’s success will rest on how well Production +h. can carry the manga’s everyday rhythm. Teaming director Kei Suezawa with character designer Naoyuki Asano — an artist whose recent work on Urusei Yatsura and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! is built on expressive, grounded character acting — is a reasonable bet that the production understands where the series’ value sits.
For English-speaking readers, the bigger news may be the timing. Viz announcing a 2027 English release alongside a January Japanese premiere puts the adaptation on a much shorter international delay than most manga-based series see, and pairs it with a New York premiere event aimed at the very audience that made the manga’s English volumes successful.
