Though I Am an Inept Villainess is coming back in January. The anime’s official website posted a teaser promotional video on Friday for the show’s second cours, the arc titled “The First Royal Outing.” Toho confirmed the January 2027 return along with a new key visual.
A cours is a quarter-year run, roughly 12 episodes, so the split here is straightforward: the first part aired through the summer, and the second part picks up in the winter season. That is a common structure for adaptations that cannot finish in one block, and it usually means the production already has scripts and most of the animation in place before the second half starts airing.
What “The First Royal Outing” Suggests
The arc title points at the story’s next move. The series is built on a body swap between two young women in an imperial court, one a sickly noble daughter and the other her rival, and a royal outing suggests the story is finally taking the swapped pair out of the palace and into public view, where a single wrong gesture from the wrong person in the wrong body becomes a political incident.
Staff and Broadcast
The staff carried over unchanged. Mitsue Yamazaki directs at Dōga Kōbō. Her credits include How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? and Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun, both comedies with precise timing, which is why the anime’s comic beats land as well as they do. Yoshiko Nakamura oversees the series scripts, coming from Detective Conan: Zero’s Tea Time, Tadaima, Okaeri and The Helpful Fox Senko-san. Ai Kikuchi designs the characters, with Dumbbells, New Game! and Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie behind her.
The first part premiered on July 12 on TV Tokyo and its affiliates, later than planned. The show had been announced for April and was pushed to July because of delays in production progress. Netflix began streaming it in Asia on the same day it aired, Crunchyroll handled North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, the CIS and the Indian subcontinent, and TOHO’s English dub arrived on July 25 across Crunchyroll, Hulu and Disney+, with the dub also available on Netflix in Asia. For a mid-tier light novel adaptation, that is a wide footprint.
milet performed the opening theme “Sunny” for the first part, and Rokudenashi handled the ending, “Shooting Star” (Hōkiboshi). The teaser did not name theme songs for the second cours, and those announcements usually land closer to a premiere.
The Source Novels
The source is Satsuki Nakamura’s light novel series, which Ichijinsha launched in December 2020 with illustrations by YukiKana. The manga adaptation by Ei Ohitsuji started in Monthly Comic Zero-Sum at the same time, which is unusual: most adaptations trail the novels by a year or more. The novels entered their final arc, “Hoshi ni Negai o” (Wish Upon a Star), with the 13th volume on September 30. Seven Seas publishes both formats in English under the title Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court, with the manga’s ninth volume out August 4 and the light novels’ 11th English volume on September 22.
That the novels are in their last arc matters for the anime. It tells the production team how much story is left and roughly where a satisfying stopping point sits. Adaptations of finished or nearly finished material tend to be structured more cleanly than ones chasing an ongoing series, and a two-cours split fits a story that needs a mid-point break rather than an arbitrary cliffhanger.
Why It Matters
The show’s appeal is narrower than its title suggests. It is a court drama with a body swap hook, which means most of the tension comes from manners, status and who is allowed to speak to whom, not from action. That is a hard thing to sell in a crowded season. It is also the reason the series has an audience that shows up week to week instead of bingeing and forgetting.
January 2027 is already busy. The Apothecary Diaries season 3 runs in the same court-intrigue space, and Looks like a Job for a Maid! is another light novel adaptation heading for television. Inept Villainess has an advantage over both: its first cour already aired, so it starts the winter season with an audience that knows what it is getting.
Whether that audience returns depends on the arc. A royal outing is a good premise for a comedy of errors and a bad one for a story that has run out of ideas. The teaser does not give much away, and no exact premiere date has been announced beyond the month.
