Kai-hen Wizards is heading for its finale. The 45th issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday announced on Wednesday that Yellow Tanabe’s manga will publish a “series finale chapter” in the next issue on October 14.
The final chapter is an expanded one, running 26 pages. There is one caveat: the magazine did not say whether this is the end of the whole series or only the end of the current arc. The wording leaves both open, so until Shogakukan clarifies, treat the overall ending as unconfirmed. The phrase “series finale chapter” is doing a lot of work here, and the ambiguity is the whole story.
A dark premise from a veteran creator
Viz Media runs the manga’s English simultaneous publication, and its summary is blunt: a young boy has to live in exile, because his magical powers could destroy the world if they ever run loose.
That simultaneous release matters for the finale. Because Viz keeps English chapters close to the Japanese schedule, readers outside Japan will get the October 14 chapter at roughly the same time as Weekly Shonen Sunday‘s print run rather than months later.
Tanabe is no newcomer to Weekly Shonen Sunday. She began Kekkaishi in the magazine in 2003 and finished it eight years later, in 2011. That series ran as a television anime from 2006 to 2008, and Viz released it on DVD in 2011 before Discotek Media put out a Blu-ray in June 2022.
She followed Kekkaishi with Birdmen, which ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday from July 2013 to February 2020. Kai-hen Wizards is her third long serialization in the magazine, which makes a possible finale the close of a long run at one publisher.
A series that already survived one break
Kai-hen Wizards launched in September 2024, and Shogakukan published the fourth collected volume on June 18. The run has not been smooth. The manga went on hiatus on February 9 and did not come back until July 29. The magazine did not give a reason for that earlier pause.
So a final chapter arriving a few months after the return is worth watching. Combined with the loose “series finale” wording, the most careful reading is that the current storyline is closing and the publisher has more to say about what comes next.
Why it matters
Tanabe’s name carries weight on its own. Kekkaishi spent eight years in the magazine and still has a following years after it ended, and Birdmen built another loyal readership. A possible final chapter for her third series is more than a schedule note. It is the possible close of a long relationship between a creator and one of Japan’s biggest manga anthologies.
For readers, the practical question is what happens after October 14. If the finale closes the series, the story will be complete at four volumes. If it only closes an arc, more chapters could follow. Other Weekly magazine titles are wrapping up this month, and health pauses have been common across the weekly schedule. Viz has not signaled either way, and neither has Shogakukan.
If it does end, Kai-hen Wizards will conclude at four collected volumes. That is a compact run next to the 22 volumes of Kekkaishi, and it is worth saying plainly: a short, controlled story is a choice, not a failure.
