Nightmare of Oveja Negra Launches on Shonen Jump+ and MANGA Plus at Once

Shōta Kōno’s Nightmare of Oveja Negra arrived on Shonen Jump+ and MANGA Plus on the same day, with the English version going live on MANGA Plus alongside the Japanese release. The first chapter landed Tuesday for English readers and Wednesday in Japan.

The series is science fiction horror set on a salvage ship. The Oveja Negra collects and sells space junk, and it is losing money again. Captain Hank is drowning in debt. Then crew member Yuki picks up a distress signal, the crew tracks it to an abandoned mining plant, and the ship’s luck does not improve from there. MANGA Plus describes what they find inside as something abnormal happening in the plant.

That is a tight setup, and a familiar one for anybody who has read a haunted house story relocated to vacuum. Derelict facility, salvage crew, signal that should not exist. The difference is almost always in the execution rather than the premise.

A contest winner, not a pitch

Nightmare of Oveja Negra took an unusual route to the platform. The series won the grand prize of the Shonen Jump+ Rensai Grand Prix 2025, a contest built around serializing its winner. Kōno’s one-shot took first place, and the serial is that prize being paid out.

It is a different path to publication than a pitch meeting, and it means the first chapter already had a readership that voted for it. A grand prize also comes with expectations that a quiet launch does not, since the contest is public and the winner is picked in front of everyone.

Why the same-day English release matters

Simultaneous release has become the standard for Shonen Jump+ launches rather than the exception, and that changes what a new series can expect in its opening week. A manga like this would once have waited a year or more for translation, by which point the discussion had moved on. Now English-speaking readers hit chapter one within a day of Japan and follow along as the story runs.

The dating is worth spelling out because it is easy to get wrong. The English chapter went live on Tuesday, October 27, and the Japanese release followed on Wednesday, October 28, which is why Japanese listings show the later date. Both apps carry the series.

For horror that matters more than for most genres. Atmosphere and dread do not survive a year of spoilers, and a series that leans on both needs its audience reading together. It also means the English-speaking half of the audience no longer trails Japan, which was not true a decade ago.

What is not known yet

The Japanese title is Oveja Negra-gou no Akumu, and oveja negra is Spanish for black sheep. Whether the ship is named for the idiom or just for the animal is something the first chapter does not have to answer.

There is no word yet on how long the series will run, whether it is a limited serial or an open-ended one, or how many chapters the prize covers. Kōno is credited for both story and art, so there is no separate artist to watch here, and a horror serial lives or dies on how it draws a dark room.

Jump+ has launched a run of new series this autumn, including Chanta’s Noro-Noro Puku-Puku, and it keeps comedy, romance and horror in the same weekly lineup rather than sorting them into separate apps.

The first chapter is up on MANGA Plus in English and Japanese now.
