Seirei Gensouki – Spirit Chronicles is getting a third season. The anime’s official X account announced the renewal on Wednesday, confirming that the adaptation of Yuri Kitayama and Riv’s light novels will continue.
The announcement did not include a release window, staff list, or studio, so those details are still open. What is confirmed is that the story is not finished on screen.
Where the anime stands
Season 1 premiered in Japan on TV Tokyo in July 2021, also airing on BS Fuji and AT-X and streaming on Crunchyroll. Season 2 followed in October 2024, again on Crunchyroll, which also produced an English dub.
Hiroshi Kubo directed the second season, with Osamu Yamasaki — who directed season 1 at TMS Entertainment — supervising and co-writing scripts alongside Mitsutaka Hirota, Megumu Sasano, and Yoshiko Nakamura. Kyoko Yufu returned as character designer, Yasuyuki Yamazaki composed the music, and KANON handled sound production. It is not yet known which of that team will return for season 3.
What the series is about
Publisher J-Novel Club describes the story: Rio is an orphaned boy in the slums who, at seven, realises he is the reincarnation of Haruto Amakawa, a Japanese university student with a tragic past. He also discovers he has unusually potent magical abilities, uses them to help solve the kidnapping of a young girl, and is rewarded with enrolment in a prestigious academy for noble children.
The piece that has kept the series going for more than a decade is the gap between Rio’s quiet, slum-born present and the memories and grudges he carries from his past life — a slower-burn approach than the average isekai, closer to a fantasy adventure with a revenge thread running underneath it.
Source material and where to read it
Yuri Kitayama began the story on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in February 2014, and Hobby Japan began publishing print editions with illustrations by Riv in 2015. Futago Minaduki launched the manga adaptation in 2017. J-Novel Club releases both the novels and the manga in English.
Why it matters
Sequel renewals are one of the clearest signals a production committee is satisfied with how a title performs, and Spirit Chronicles has now cleared that bar twice: two television seasons, a dub, and ongoing Crunchyroll distribution. A third season means the anime is staying reasonably close to source material that is still being published, rather than stopping at a test run.
The next milestone to watch is a date and a studio: season 2 sat with TMS-affiliated staff and a returning core team, and whether that group reassembles will say a lot about the turnaround time.
