Kagurabachi Anime Casts Yūichi Nakamura as Soshiro Azami

The Kagurabachi anime has added its first marquee cast member. CyberAgent announced on Friday that Yūichi Nakamura is joining the television anime of Takeru Hokazono’s Kagurabachi manga as Soshiro Azami, a sorcerer affiliated with the Kamunabi.

It is the first significant cast reveal for a production that has been building anticipation since the manga debuted in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in September 2023. The anime will premiere in April 2027 and stream worldwide in that same month, excluding Japan, mainland China, North Korea and South Korea.

Who is Soshiro Azami?

Azami is described as a sorcerer tied to the Kamunabi, the organisation that plays a central role in the manga’s power structure. The announcement did not say how large the role will be or how early in the story Azami appears, so it is worth treating this as a casting confirmation rather than a sign of how the series will be structured.

Nakamura is one of the most in-demand voice actors in the industry, with leading roles across major shōnen properties, including Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen and Gray Fullbuster in Fairy Tail. Casting him for Kagurabachi signals a production betting on heavyweight talent from the start.

The staff and studio behind the anime

Tetsuya Takeuchi is directing the anime at Cypic. Takeuchi directed From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad’s Been Reincarnated! and worked as a key animator on Naruto and Naruto Shippūden. Keigo Sasaki, the character designer for Blue Exorcist and Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray, is designing the characters. Shochiku and CyberAgent are on the production committee.

CyberAgent has a substantial animation footprint: the company founded Cygames in 2011, established a Cygames anime division in March 2015, and set up the production subsidiary Cygames Pictures in April 2016.

A world tour before the premiere

The Kagurabachi anime has been on an unusual promotional run. Its “world tour” kicked off in July at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, then moved to Japan Expo Paris and ANImagic in Mannheim, Germany, before continuing in August at Anime NYC. The event shows the first 20 minutes of the first episode. It will wrap up in Japan in spring 2027, where the full first episode will be screened.

The manga behind it

Hokazono launched Kagurabachi in Weekly Shonen Jump in September 2023. Shueisha published the manga’s 12th compiled volume in Japan on September 4, and the series has 4 million copies in circulation. Viz Media’s Shonen Jump service and Shueisha’s MANGA Plus service release the manga digitally in English, while Viz is also releasing it in print and put out the eighth volume on August 4.

The series arrived with critical backing rather than just sales. It topped the print category at the Next Manga Awards 2024, was nominated for the 70th Shogakukan Manga Awards in December 2024 and the 49th Kodansha Manga Awards in April 2025, and was nominated for the 2025 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. It also ranked 13th on Da Vinci’s list of the top manga titles of 2025.

If you are tracking the wave of 2027 manga adaptations, Glasses With a Chance of Delinquent also locked in an April 2027 premiere with a fresh cast reveal, while Shueisha’s other big screen push is the new Naruto limited TV anime series.

Why it matters

Cast announcements are often the clearest sign that a heavily hyped adaptation is actually moving. For Kagurabachi, a series whose reputation grew faster than its volume count, the first named cast member confirms the production is no longer just a licensed title on a slideshow — it is assembling itself in public. The April 2027 date and the worldwide streaming window, with South Korea notably excluded, also give a rough map of where and when international viewers will be able to watch.

Expect more casting news as the premiere approaches and the world tour reaches its final stop in Japan.
