Rebuild World has a production team and a face. Kadokawa revealed the main staff and the first key visual on Saturday, October 3, for the television anime of Nahuse’s light novel series, via a newly opened official website.
The reveal ends a long stretch of silence. Kadokawa first announced the anime at Anime Expo in early July 2023, and Dengeki Bunko announced the main cast members later that same month. No further information about the project had surfaced publicly until this weekend.
The main staff
Tsukasa Sakurai (Because I, the True Saint, was Banished, that Country is Done For!, director of Ryūsatsu no Kyōkotsu) is the chief director at the studio Raging Bull. Shingo Uchida, an episode director on Attack on Titan TV season 3, Vinland Saga and After the Rain, is directing the series.
Naoki Tozuka (I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince across both seasons, Meiji Gekken: 1874) is overseeing series scripts, and Hiromi Katō (Kobato., Goblin Slayer II, A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special both seasons) is designing the characters, with others also credited on design.
The lineup shares names with another adaptation announced the same day, the anime of Because I, the True Saint, was Banished, where Sakurai directs and Tozuka writes. Both projects landing on the same weekend points to a production pipeline working through several light novel titles at once.
What Rebuild World is
J-Novel Club, which is releasing both the light novels and the manga adaptation in English, describes the story like this: Akira is a young street orphan in the slums who sets out to become a hunter to escape his brutal life. Untrained, malnourished and poorly armed, he would be lucky to survive a single trip into the ruins — until he meets Alpha, a mysterious, ghostly woman who needs a hunter and is willing to train one. Her support sets Akira on a path to climb a merciless world from the bottom.
Kadokawa publishes the novels by Nahuse, with illustrations by Gin, environmental art by yish and mechanical design by cell. Nahuse began publishing the story on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō and Kakuyomu websites in February 2017, with the most recent online chapter posted in August 2021. Kadokawa began the print release in 2019, and the ninth volume is scheduled for November 17.
A manga adaptation drawn by Kirihito Ayamura launched in July 2019, and Kadokawa published its 16th compiled volume on July 27. The novels ranked at No. 5 on the tankōbon rankings of the 2020 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! guidebook.
Why it matters
For a project announced in 2023 and then quiet for more than three years, a staff list and key visual are meaningful simply as proof of motion. The gap is not unusual for anime adaptations announced well before production begins, but it is long enough that some fans had started to wonder whether the project was still moving.
The more interesting detail is the studio. Raging Bull is not one of the large, brand-name houses, which makes the chief director and series writer the factors most likely to determine how the show looks and reads. Sakurai’s work leans toward sharp, kinetic material — including The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. and, more recently, the banished-saint adaptation — and Rebuild World‘s mix of slum-level survival and high-tech ruins gives that sensibility a lot to work with.
No premiere date, episode count or full cast list has been announced yet. We will update this article as those details are confirmed.
