The Kept Man of the Princess Knight Anime Reveals First PV and MYTH & ROID Opening

Kadokawa pulled back the curtain on The Kept Man of the Princess Knight this weekend. At the “Dengeki Bunko Aki no Saiten Online 2026” livestream on Saturday, October 3, the publisher revealed the first main promotional video for the television anime of Toru Shirogane’s light novel series, along with a new key visual and additional cast.

The video reveals and previews the opening theme, “True-Taboo” by MYTH & ROID. The ending theme, “Gika” (Flower Head), will be performed by sajou no hana. Both are the kind of musical reveals that tend to arrive once a project is far enough along to commit to a broadcast window, even though a premiere date has not been announced yet.

Cast, staff and studio

The anime stars Junichi Suwabe as Matthew and Mikako Komatsu as Arwin. Chihiro Kumano (A Couple of Cuckoos, Eiga Odekake Kozame Tokai no Otomodachi) is directing the series at BLADE. Hisao Ishii (There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless…, In Search of the Lost Future) is designing the characters based on the original light novel designs by Saki Mashima, and Deko Akao (After the Rain, Arakawa Under the Bridge) is handling series scripts.

It is a compact, experienced lineup, and BLADE is a studio that has handled both action-heavy and character-driven work. It also follows a run of Dengeki Bunko adaptation reveals, including the main staff and key visual for the Rebuild World anime the same weekend. For a story that leans on the gap between how a man is seen and what he can actually do, the direction and character animation will carry a lot of the load.

What the story is

Yen Press publishes the novels in English and describes the premise like this: The Dungeon City is a wicked place filled with crime, debauchery and death. Its one shining light is Arwin, the beautiful Crimson Princess Knight. She and her brave party of adventurers descend into the dungeon at the city’s center, seeking a legendary treasure with the power to rebuild the princess’s fallen kingdom. Many yearn to be by her side, but that spot is already taken by Matthew, a man despised by all in town as a cowardly weakling. Everyone thinks he is scum who just spends her hard-earned money on booze, women and gambling. No one in the city — not even the princess knight — knows what Matthew is truly capable of.

That setup — a protagonist underestimated by everyone around him — is a well-worn shape in light novels, but Shirogane’s series earned some credibility before its anime was even announced. The novels have over 200,000 copies in circulation and won the grand prize at the 28th annual Dengeki Novel Awards, one of the more competitive contests in the light novel space.

The books and the manga

Kadokawa shipped the seventh novel volume on July 10, and Yen Press shipped the sixth volume in English on August 11. A manga adaptation by Keyyang is also running; Kadokawa shipped the third compiled volume in December 2024, and Yen Press published that same third volume in English on January 6.

So there is a reasonable amount of material already available for anyone who wants to get ahead of the anime, in both formats and in English.

Why it matters

A first PV, a key visual, two theme songs and a cast reveal all landing at once is a sign that production is moving on schedule, even without a date. For Dengeki Bunko, this is one of several adaptations the label is pushing through at the moment, and its award pedigree gives it a slightly different profile from the pure rom-com and isekai titles around it.

The obvious remaining questions are the premiere window and whether a streaming partner outside Japan will be announced. Neither has been confirmed. We will update this article as more details arrive.
