Firefly Wedding Anime Adds Kanon Amane as the Courtesan Yukari

Firefly Wedding has added another name to its anime cast. The show’s official X account announced on Thursday that Kanon Amane will voice Yukari, a courtesan at the Isekichi brothel.

Yukari is a supporting role, and the announcement did not include a first appearance date.

The cast so far

The series already has its leads locked. Lynn voices Satoko Kirigaya and Kōki Uchiyama voices Shinpei Gotō. Kent Itō plays Kōtarō Ogawa, and Kenjirō Tsuda plays Mitsueda. That is a solid lineup for a period romance, and Tsuda in particular has been showing up in a lot of high-profile casts this year.

Firefly Wedding comes from Oreko Tachibana, who launched the manga on Shogakukan’s Manga ONE app in January 2023. Viz Media publishes it in English. The premise is a marriage proposal used as a survival tactic: Satoko is a nobleman’s daughter with a short time left to live, Shinpei is the assassin sent to kill her, and she talks him into marrying her instead. He takes the “until death do us part” line more literally than most husbands.

Shogakukan published the 12th compiled volume on June 19. The 13th and final volume arrives on October 19, along with a volume of spinoff chapters.

Where to watch it

The anime is airing right now. It premiered on October 9 in Fuji TV’s Noitamina block, Fridays at 11:30 p.m., and Crunchyroll streams it as it airs.

Behind the camera, Takahiro Kamei is directing at david production. Kamei handled the 2022 to 2024 Urusei Yatsura series, which is a useful reference point: that show had to balance comedy, a large cast, and a recognizable visual identity from an older source. Yukiko Aikei is designing the characters, with credits that include Your Lie in April, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, and Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. Yūko Kakihara is overseeing and writing the series scripts, coming off Urusei Yatsura, IRODUKU, and Blue Box. NOGRID is composing the music.

The theme songs are iri’s “Period” for the opening and TOOBOE’s “Yumegokochi” for the ending.

Two adaptations at once

Fuji TV announced a live-action Firefly Wedding series for 2027, which means the same broadcaster is building the property across formats in back-to-back years. That is fast, and it suggests the network sees the title as more than a single-season anime.

For the anime, the practical question is pacing. The manga is finished at 13 volumes, so the production team knows exactly where the story ends and how much material it has to work with. Adaptations of completed manga tend to be tighter for that reason, and with the final volume landing this month, there is no risk of the anime catching up to the source.

Kanon Amane voicing a brothel courtesan also hints at how the anime intends to handle the red-light district setting. The manga uses it as backdrop for a story about a woman with limited time and a killer who turns out to be the one person willing to keep her alive. How far the adaptation leans into that atmosphere will become clear over the next few episodes.
