Firefly Wedding is getting a second adaptation while its first one is still on air. The official website for the manga’s television anime announced on Saturday that Oreko Tachibana’s series will get a live-action adaptation on Fuji TV in 2027. The site also posted a video, but the clip is not available in the United States.
The timing is fast. The anime adaptation only debuted on Friday, October 9, and it airs on Fuji TV’s Noitamina block on Fridays at 11:30 p.m. Crunchyroll streams the series as it airs. So the same broadcaster that just launched the anime is already lining up a live-action version for the following year.
What Firefly Wedding is about
Viz Media publishes the manga in English, and its description sets up the premise. Satoko appears to have everything: she is beautiful, the daughter of a nobleman, and at a prime age for marriage. She is also seriously ill, with only a short time left to live. Before she can arrange a marriage that would redeem her standing in her family’s eyes, she becomes the target of a mysterious assassin named Shinpei. To save herself, she makes a desperate marriage proposal. Shinpei, as it turns out, takes “until death do we part” quite literally.
That mix of historical romance and danger is the hook. It is a period setting with a contract marriage at its center, and the assassin angle gives the love story a sharp edge.
Where the manga stands
Tachibana launched Firefly Wedding, known in Japan as Hotaru no Yomeiri, on Shogakukan’s Manga ONE app in January 2023. The series ended on January 12 of this year. Shogakukan published the 12th compiled volume on June 19, and the 13th and final volume arrives on October 19. A volume of spinoff chapters will launch on the same day as that final book.
The manga’s print run is landing right around the same window as the anime, which is likely no accident. The last volume and the anime premiere are close enough together to feed each other, and the live-action announcement adds a third piece to the same promotional push.
Why it matters
Live-action adaptations of romance manga are common in Japan, but the speed here stands out. Most series get years between an anime and any live-action version, if they get one at all. Fuji TV greenlighting a live-action take in the same week the anime premiered suggests the network sees Firefly Wedding as a property worth building out across formats.
For overseas readers, the anime on Crunchyroll is the easiest way in, and the manga from Viz is the natural next step. What form the live-action takes, and who is cast, has not been announced yet. That is the detail to watch as 2027 approaches.
