Comikey Licenses The Wolf King’s Bride, 19 Volumes in English

Comikey has licensed Mato Kauta’s The Wolf King’s Bride (Ōkami-Heika no Hanayome), a shōjo series that ran in Hakusensha’s LaLa magazine from 2009 to 2018 and never had an English release. The company announced the pickup on Friday and released the first five chapters digitally, with new chapters going up every Friday.

Nineteen volumes are waiting if the schedule holds. That is a lot of backlog for a series nobody in English has been able to read legally until now, and the weekly rollout means readers following along will be roughly a decade behind the Japanese release for a while.

What The Wolf King’s Bride is about

The story follows Yurin, the daughter of a low-level official who takes what looks like a well-paid palace job. It is not. Her role is to play the bride of the cold and ruthless Wolf King, Haku Reisho, and the rear palace she lands in is thick with conspiracy. Then she learns His Majesty’s secret. Comikey’s own summary leans on that hook without giving the reveal away, which is fair enough.

Part of a bigger Hakusensha push

The pickup is part of a larger move. Comikey said in August it would release several shōjo titles from Hakusensha’s catalogue in English digitally, and teased an image that included this manga. The Wolf King’s Bride is the one that teaser was pointing at.

October has been busy on the platform. Comikey has released or will release:

  • How I Became the Duke’s Beloved Daughter by Soukai Studio, a webtoon (October 7)
  • Local Farmer Kills Dragon, Outs Himself as The Strongest in the Land! by Nozomu Amaike and Kenichi Kisaragi (October 12)
  • At Home with a Girl in Her Cute Pajamas by Kizu Kanoda, Yukiko Tadano, and Shisseki (October 14)
  • The Bound Hero Knows No Fear by Tomoki Matsumoto and LOSA (October 19)
  • My Faceless Classmate, Wakao by Inariyama (October 21)
  • I’m the Demon Lord, but For Some Reason the Hero’s Infatuated With Me by Punichan and Maro Yanagiya (October 26)
  • The Black-Winged Emperor Adores the Shunned Saint in the Tower by taskey, a webtoon (October 28)
  • I’m Marrying the Pauper Count of a Remote Frontier, So I’ll Work Hard to Reform his Territory ~The Letter From Boule~ by Bodax, Kaoruho Hananami, and Jio Miyata (October 30)

Why a 19-volume license matters

The Hakusensha back catalogue is one of the bigger untapped libraries for English shōjo readers, and it has mostly sat behind print-first math that does not work for long series. Digital releases change that arithmetic. A completed title with a devoted Japanese readership can arrive at chapter one and build an audience week by week, with no print run to justify and no shelf space to negotiate.

A 19-volume LaLa series that never crossed over is the kind of gap that shapes what English shōjo readers can actually talk about. Most of the conversation around older shōjo happens through series that got a release in the 2000s and then went out of print. This one skipped the queue entirely.

For readers who prefer print, this announcement does nothing. That is the trade-off with Comikey’s model, and it is worth being honest about it. But the alternative for a title like this was another decade of nothing. The same appetite for catalogue rescues shows in Kodansha USA’s ten new licenses this month, which lean hard on older and niche material too.
