Shochiku is making a live-action film of Mizuki Hoshino’s Fukakōryoku no I Love You. The company announced the project along with a Japanese release date of March 5, 2027, and confirmed both leads.
Kōta Nomura plays Saku Wataya. Juri Kōsaka plays Sena Kodama. If Nomura’s face looks familiar in a manga context, that’s because it is. He was in the live-action BLUE LOCK film and the live-action My Dress-Up Darling. Kōsaka’s recent work includes The Scent of the Wind.
Who is making the film
Yuka Yasukawa directs. She has spent a lot of her career in exactly this territory: the live-action My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999, and the second season of At 25:00 in Akasaka. Haruka Ōkita wrote the screenplay, with credits on And Yet, You Are So Sweet and Kiss Me at the Stroke of Midnight. Yoshitaka Fujimoto composed the music.
What the manga is about
The story starts with a girl trying to talk herself out of a crush. Sena Kodama is a first-year high school student. Wataya is a senior, the boy everyone notices, and Sena would very much like to stop noticing him. She wants to get over it and move on. What she gets instead is a “try-out date” with him, which is the sort of arrangement that only works if nobody develops actual feelings. Good luck with that.
Hoshino launched the manga in Shueisha’s Margaret in August 2023. The ninth compiled volume shipped on June 25 this year. Nine volumes in under three years is a brisk pace for a Margaret series, and the film arriving in March 2027 puts the adaptation roughly three and a half years out from chapter one. That is quick by shoujo adaptation standards, where a title often has to prove itself over a much longer run before anyone greenlights a feature.
Hoshino is not a first-timer either. She started Tiger & Dragon in Bessatsu Margaret in February 2022 and finished it with the fourth volume in April 2023. Seven Seas released all four volumes in English, so there is already an English-language audience that knows her name, even if that audience found her through a different series.
Why the casting and the date both matter
What the film means in practice comes down to two things. The first is casting. Nomura is a known quantity with manga fans now, and putting him opposite Kōsaka gives Shochiku a pairing the marketing can sell on the poster alone, before anyone has seen a frame. The second is timing. A March release lands in the window where Japanese distributors traditionally put school-set romance films, which tells you who Shochiku thinks this is for.
The live-action manga pipeline has been busy lately, and not only in romance. Firefly Wedding is getting a Fuji TV adaptation in 2027, and Hideki Arai’s SPUNK! landed a film from Keisuke Yoshida. Publishers are treating screen adaptations as a standard part of a series’ life cycle now rather than a lucky break.
What we still don’t know
Shochiku hasn’t announced the supporting cast, and no trailer or teaser visual has been released beyond the announcement art. There’s no word on international distribution. Those details usually arrive over the next few months, and for a film opening in March 2027, expect the first real promotional push in the winter.
For manga readers outside Japan, the more interesting question is whether the film brings a license for the source material with it. A live-action adaptation usually does one of two things: it either pulls new readers toward an existing English release, or it creates enough demand that somebody finally licenses a title that had been sitting unclaimed. Which one happens here depends on whether a publisher moves first.
Fukakōryoku no I Love You opens in Japan on March 5, 2027.
