The Fledgling Demon Lord’s Starter Shop Anime Reveals 2nd Teaser, New Cast and January 2027 Debut

The television anime of Makoto Morishita’s The Fledgling Demon Lord’s Starter Shop (Sudachi no Maōjō) finally has a date to work with. The series’ official website on Tuesday, October 6 unveiled a second teaser promotional video, a new key visual, one additional cast member, and a January 2027 premiere on Tokyo MX, MBS, BS11 and other channels.

The news firms up a project that until now had only been teased. A second promotional video arriving alongside a broadcast window, rather than a text-only notice, is a strong sign that production is well underway at project No.9.

What the new teaser shows

The opening announcement came with a fresh character visual built around the show’s three central figures. Two previously confirmed cast members lead the image: Reiji Kawashima as Murabito, also known as Villager, positioned in the centre, and Rumi Ōkubo as Mao on the left.

Completing the trio on the right is Ash, the hero who once defeated the demon lord — and the newest name on the cast list. Ash is voiced by Yōhei Azakami, who was confirmed as the additional cast member alongside the teaser.

The second teaser video itself expands on the first look at the show, giving a clearer sense of tone and motion than the initial reveal. For a series built on the aftermath of a hero’s victory rather than the battle itself, that tone is the whole pitch.

What The Fledgling Demon Lord’s Starter Shop is about

Kodansha’s K MANGA service releases the manga in English and describes the premise as follows:

After the hero defeated the demon lord, the world is finally at peace… leaving the young Villager of Beginnerville in a bind! Without a demon lord to defeat, people have no need for potions and items…leaving Villager’s item shop, The Nest, empty and lifeless. At this rate, Villager might have to close The Nest…! But then suddenly a mysterious girl appears and everything changes…

That hook — a fantasy world whose economy collapses because the threat is gone, told through the eyes of a shopkeeper — is a quiet, character-driven angle rather than a power-fantasy one. It also explains why the demon lord’s defeat is presented as the beginning of the story rather than its climax.

Staff and studio

  • Director: Jun Taira, at project No.9
  • Series scripts: Keiichirō Ōchi (Adachi and Shimamura, The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten, Once Upon a Witch’s Death)
  • Character design: Katsuyuki Sato (Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!, Plus-Sized Elf, My Friend’s Little Sister Has It In for Me!)
  • Animation production: project No.9

The creative team leans heavily on the lighter, romance-adjacent end of the adaptation market. Ōchi’s credits are dominated by warm, dialogue-driven comedies and romances, while Sato’s character work spans several bright, stylised slice-of-life titles. Both fit a series whose appeal rests on everyday interactions inside a small shop rather than large-scale action.

The manga behind the anime

Morishita launched The Fledgling Demon Lord’s Starter Shop in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Magazine in October 2021. Kodansha will ship the 14th compiled book volume on October 16, roughly a week after the anime reveal — a release rhythm that gives readers a fresh volume to pick up at the exact moment the anime promotion peaks.

It is not Morishita’s first serialisation. The author launched IM: The Great Priest Imhotep in Square Enix’s Shonen Gangan magazine in January 2015, after first publishing a one-shot. Square Enix published the 11th and final volume in September 2018, and Yen Press licensed the manga for English release, publishing the 11th volume in February 2019.

Why it matters

A January 2027 slot lands the anime in one of the most competitive seasons of the year, but it also gives the series an extended runway: a teaser cycle that began before the premiere date was confirmed, a new volume timed to the announcement, and a full season to build awareness ahead of broadcast.

For fans of the manga, the key detail is that the adaptation is being handled by a studio and writing team whose strengths are atmosphere and character rather than spectacle — which is precisely what a shop-set story needs.

Several other series have already locked in January 2027 windows, including Because I, the True Saint, was Banished. Key visuals have also been arriving steadily across the season’s upcoming slate, from Rebuild World to Charisma.
