Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend Film Streams Its First 4 Minutes

The next Rascal Does Not Dream film is almost here, and Aniplex is already giving fans a taste of it. The staff for Seishun Buta Yarō wa Dear Friend no Yume o Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend) began streaming the film’s first four minutes on Sunday, October 4, alongside a “finale visual” posted to the franchise’s channels.

The new film is being positioned as the story’s endgame. It shares its name with the 15th and final volume of Hajime Kamoshida’s light novel series, and the marketing has leaned into that sense of closure. For a franchise that has spent nearly a decade following its cast through adolescence and into university, a finale carries obvious weight.

The returning staff

The film reassembles the core team behind the recent entries, the same CloverWorks outfit behind this fall’s omnibus film Grotesqqque. Sōichi Masui returns to direct at CloverWorks, Masahiro Yokotani is back to oversee and write the script, and Satomi Tamura is again handling character designs. The band fox capture plan also returns to compose the music, and Aniplex is once again distributing.

Tōko Kirishima handles the music this time, performing the song “Turn the World Upside Down” as well as the theme song “Suihei-sen wa Boku no Furukizu finale” (The Horizon Is My Old Wound: Finale).

Release date and a first-week bonus

Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend opens in theaters in Japan on October 16. The film’s advance screening was held at the Shinjuku Wald 9 theater in Tokyo on Sunday, the same day the four-minute preview went online.

Fans who see the film during its first week of release will receive a bonus: a new text story written by Kamoshida titled Seishun Buta Yarō wa Tea Garden no Yume o Miru (Rascal Does Dream of a Tea Garden). The short story follows Sakuta, Mai and Shoko after a shopping trip, with illustrations by Keeji Mizoguchi. Theater bonuses of this kind have become a standard part of the franchise’s releases, and this one is positioned as an epilogue-adjacent extra.

Where the story stands

The original anime, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, premiered in Japan in October 2018 and ran for 13 episodes, adapting the story up to the fifth novel volume. Aniplex of America streamed it on Crunchyroll and Funimation. The first film, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl, adapted the sixth and seventh volumes and opened in Japan in June 2019; Crunchyroll began streaming it with subtitles and a dub in June 2025.

Two more films followed. Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out opened in June 2023 and sold 118,108 tickets over its first three days, earning 175,648,924 yen (about US$1.28 million) and ranking fourth in its opening weekend. Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid opened in December 2023, also ranking fourth, with 119,000 tickets and 164,594,554 yen (about US$1.11 million) over its first three days. Then the “University Student Arc” arrived as a TV anime, Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, in July 2025, which Crunchyroll streamed and dubbed.

The novel series has over three million copies in circulation. Yen Press’s Yen On imprint publishes the novels in English and released the Dear Friend volume on January 6, while Yen Press also publishes Tsugumi Nanamiya’s manga adaptation.

Why it matters

Finale films are tricky for long-running franchises: they have to satisfy readers who already know the ending and newcomers who do not. Rascal Does Not Dream has an advantage in that its emotional core — Sakuta and Mai, and the strange afflictions that pull the people around them into crisis — has been consistently adapted by the same creative team, which is rare for a series this long. CloverWorks has handled the anime across the TV series and films, and the returning director-writer pair gives the finale a continuity that many endings do not get.

Whether the film reaches theaters outside Japan has not been announced. Crunchyroll’s recent handling of the earlier film suggests a Western release is plausible, but nothing has been confirmed. We will update this article if that changes.
