Sekiro: No Defeat is officially becoming a full TV anime, and we now know exactly how it’s shaped. The series will run for eight episodes starting in January 2027, with a new key visual released alongside the announcement.
If that episode count sounds specific, there’s a reason for it. The project was originally designed as an eight-episode TV series from the start. During production, the staff decided they wanted audiences to experience the anime’s visuals and sound on a theater screen first — which is why an edited film version was released ahead of the show.
What the TV version adds
The TV anime won’t simply be the film chopped into pieces. According to the production team, the series will be reconstructed around the story shown in the currently screening film, while adding numerous new episodes, scenes, and cuts that never made it into the theatrical cut.
So if you already watched the movie, there’s still a genuine reason to tune in. And if you’re coming in fresh in January, you won’t be watching a recap — you’ll be watching the version the team originally set out to make.
The film’s run got extended
The theatrical release was planned as a three-week limited run in Japan. Thanks to the response from audiences, that run has now been expanded.
ARCH, the studio behind the project, shared a statement thanking everyone who made the trip to theaters, and went on to explain the thinking behind the unusual release order:
“This project originally began as an eight-episode TV series. However, as production progressed, our desire grew stronger to have audiences first experience the overwhelming visuals and sound of this work on a theater screen, so we decided to release an edited film version in advance.
“We apologize for not having previously informed everyone that the film currently in theaters is an edited version, or about the existence of the TV series.
“Whether you have already seen the film or will be experiencing this work for the first time through the TV series, we hope you will look forward to it.”
Why the delay makes sense
Releasing a film first and a fuller TV version later is an unusual path, and it’s fair to say some fans were caught off guard — the statement itself reads like an acknowledgment of that.
That said, you can see the logic. A theatrical window gives a project a level of audiovisual polish and attention that a standard seasonal slot often can’t match. The tradeoff is that it leaves the TV audience in an awkward spot if they don’t know a film exists at all.
Now that everything’s out in the open, the picture is clear: eight episodes, January 2027, with the film serving as an early look rather than the final word.
