Toei will open Girls Band Cry the Movie on May 21, 2027. The film’s first teaser video and a key visual debuted on Tuesday, and the teaser carries a detail worth pausing on: inside the film’s story, TOGENASHI TOGEARI goes on a national tour.
That is the first real look at what the film is about. The staff have not described the plot, but everything announced so far points to a story set after the television run rather than a recap of it.
Who is back
The official website confirmed the returning staff along with the teaser.
Kazuo Sakai directs. Jukki Hanada writes the screenplay. Kenji Tamai of agehasprings is music producer, with Yusuke Tanaka of the same company handling music. Nari Teshima is on character design, and Jae Hoon Jung and Daiki Nakazawa are the CG directors.
The full five-member cast returns. Mirei and Natsu stepped away from the project in July 2024 for health reasons while Rina, Yuri and Syuri carried on, and both were back at dialogue recording by April 2025. The new film credits all five.
The tour is not only on screen
Two live events were announced with the film.
A stage production runs from March 21 to 28 at Sunshine Theatre in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The real TOGENASHI TOGEARI band performs a concert at K-Arena Yokohama on March 20, the day before the stage run begins.
For a franchise where the voice actresses play their own instruments and perform as the band, that pairing makes sense. The anime and the live act have been the same product since the start.
What came before
Girls Band Cry premiered in April 2024 and ran 13 episodes. Toei Animation released it digitally in English in North America in August 2024, and Crunchyroll began streaming it in November 2024.
The series had already been recut into a two-film compilation. Seishun Kyosokyoku opened on October 3, 2025, and Naa, Mirai. followed on November 14, 2025. Those were edited versions of the TV run. This is a new film with new material, which is a different proposition entirely.
Internationally, Indonesia’s Catchplay+ was the first service anywhere to carry the anime with English subtitles, starting May 31, 2024. Thai distributor Cartoon Club brought it to Thailand that July with a Thai dub, the first announced international dub for the title.
Why Girls Band Cry keeps growing
The show should not have worked as well as it did. It is a CG anime about a high school dropout who joins a band, which sounds like a dozen other music projects, and its first episodes are genuinely unpleasant to watch because Nina is difficult and the band treats her badly.
What carried it was the music and the argument scenes. Hanada writes fights that sound like real fights, where people say the wrong thing and mean it, and the CG direction kept the performances readable during songs.
The franchise has also been unusually active between projects. A game called Girls Band Cry First Riff is in development, and Momoka (o) Wasshoi, a separate PC title, launched on Steam on September 28, 2025.
The release date is doing some work
May 21, 2027 sits in a crowded season, and Toei knows it. Putting the film out in late spring, months after the March stage run and concert, gives the live events a chance to build momentum first instead of competing with the film for attention.
It also means a two-year gap from the compilation films. Long enough that the audience has to be reminded, which is what a teaser in early November is for.
The winter before it is already booked solid, with the BanG Dream! It’s MyGo!!!!! // Ave Mujica sequel and Love Live! Hasu no Sora both premiering in January. There is more room for music anime on the calendar than there was two years ago, and Toei is not rushing this one into it.
Nothing has been announced about international release. Toei handled the North American digital release of the series itself, so a theatrical rollout outside Japan is possible, but no distributor has been named.
