Magilumiere Co. Ltd. creator Yū Aoki announced on X on Friday that she has launched a new boat racing manga with Ya Boy Kongming! creator Yuto Yotsuba. Titled Boat Girl, the series began on the Piccoma manga platform the same day, with Yotsuba credited for the original concept.
Boat racing, known in Japan as kyōtei, is a well-established spectator sport with its own betting scene, and it has supported a long line of sports manga. Pairing two creators with track records in very different kinds of series makes this one of the more noteworthy new launches of the month.
Yū Aoki and Magilumiere
Aoki is best known as the artist on Magilumiere Co. Ltd. (Kabushikigaisha Magilumière), written by Sekka Iwata. The pair launched the manga on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ service in October 2021, and it ran to its 160th chapter before ending in July 2025. The 18th and final compiled volume shipped in September 2025.
The title also became one of Shonen Jump+’s adaptation success stories. Its television anime’s second season premiered on NTV on July 4 this year, following a first season that aired in Japan from October to December 2024. Amazon Prime Video streamed the anime globally.
Yuto Yotsuba and Ya Boy Kongming!
Yotsuba has been one of the busiest writers in the space. Alongside artist Ryō Ogawa, Yotsuba launched Ya Boy Kongming! (Paripi Kōmei) on Kodansha’s Comic Days website in Japanese in December 2019, and the series also began running in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine in November 2021. Yotsuba writes the story, Ogawa draws the art.
That manga has since spread across almost every format available:
- Anime: premiered in April 2022, streamed exclusively and simultaneously by HIDIVE, with an English dub also produced
- Home video: licensed by Sentai Filmworks and released in April 2023
- Compilation film: Paripi Kōmei Road to Summer Sonia screened in Japanese theaters in March 2024
- Live action: a series aired on Fuji TV’s “Shinsui 10 Drama” slot from September to November 2023, and a live-action film opened in Japan in April 2025
More recently, Yotsuba and Yoshie Katō launched the manga Tōkyō Kinoko ~Sekai Ranking 1-i no Komyuryoku Saijaku JK~ on Shueisha’s Tonari no Young Jump website in August 2025.
Why it matters
Piccoma has become a major destination for manga in Japan, and a new series debuting there rather than in a traditional print magazine reflects how much of the market’s reading now happens on platform apps. For a creator coming off a completed series, launching on a service with that kind of reach is a practical way to find readers quickly.
It also continues a pattern of Aoki and Yotsuba each keeping several projects moving at once. Aoki’s Magilumiere wrapped up its run last year, and Yotsuba has juggled multiple series alongside Ya Boy Kongming!, whose adaptations are still arriving years after the manga began.
Boat racing gives the new title a subject with built-in local appeal in Japan, where the sport is followed closely, while the pairing of a proven artist with a writer whose work has repeatedly been adapted gives it a clear reason to be watched.
The launch lands in a busy period for new manga. Aoki’s fellow Shonen Jump+ series continue to spawn adaptations, including Where Is the Elf Teacher’s Toilet?, which has been picked up for television, while completed titles such as Snowball Earth show how quickly a manga can build an audience large enough to support one.
