ghost – end of night has three more names in its cast. The official site for Shingo Natsume and Madhouse’s film announced on Wednesday that Kenjirō Tsuda, Hiroki Yasumoto and Hiroshi Kamiya have joined, and it described each of their characters.
Tsuda plays Moby Dick, a man who takes an interest in the protagonist Neekei. Yasumoto is Karate, a childhood friend of Masu and a section manager at the observatory where Neekei works. Kamiya is Itō, another of Masu’s childhood friends and the observatory’s mental coach.
Mayu Hotta plays Neekei. Issei Takahashi plays Masu, though the film has not settled on an official romanization of that name yet.
Bandai Namco Filmworks describes the premise this way: in a near future where labor is no longer necessary, Neekei is a girl who keeps searching for what is “real” while pushing back against the order of a content society.
Natsume’s first original film
Shingo Natsume directs at Madhouse and wrote the script himself. He has spent most of his career on television, with ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., One-Punch Man, Space Dandy and Sonny Boy behind him. This is his first time directing an original anime film rather than adapting or continuing someone else’s material.
Natsume Ono, the manga creator behind ACCA, Ristorante Paradiso and House of Five Leaves, designed the original characters. Norifumi Kugai, who worked with Natsume on ACCA and Sonny Boy, designed the characters for animation.
Alternative rock band hitsujibungaku performs the theme song, and also the insert song “Sugar.”
The film opens in Japan on February 11, 2027.
It has already been seen
ghost – end of night has screened for GKIDS, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and at Variety’s Animation is Film festival, which ran from October 16 to 19. A festival run ahead of a domestic release says something about how the film is being positioned: this is being sold on its director rather than on a franchise.
Natsume said he was aiming for “a work that could be called fictional but is in tune with our current time and seeks realism.”
The manga version is already running
A manga adaptation by artist himiko launched in Kadokawa’s Young Ace magazine on August 4, months before the film arrives. Adapting a film into a manga before release is the reverse of the usual order and gives the story a second life in print while the theatrical window is still ahead.
Whether the manga follows the film exactly is not something anyone has confirmed. Himiko is credited as the artist, which suggests a straight adaptation of Natsume’s script rather than an original side story.
Why the cast list is the story here
Tsuda, Yasumoto and Kamiya are three of the most recognisable voices in the industry, and none of them is playing the lead. Putting that kind of weight in supporting roles tells you the film wants a lived-in adult cast around a young protagonist, which fits a story about a girl surrounded by people who have already made their peace with the way things work.
The character descriptions do quiet work too. Karate and Itō are both defined by their relationship to Masu, not to Neekei. That suggests the film’s emotional center may sit with the adults looking at her rather than entirely with her.
Nothing about a Western release has been announced. The festival screenings through GKIDS are a strong hint that one is coming, but a distributor and a date would need to be confirmed before anyone plans around it.
Natsume’s television work is still running too. One-Punch Man’s third season continues in January 2027, though he directed only the first season and moved on long before this arc.
