The anime adaptation of Kuzushiro’s The Moon on a Rainy Night (Amayo no Tsuki) has its first trailer and its main cast. The production revealed the promo video together with the two lead voice actors on Wednesday, and confirmed the series will premiere in 2027.
Sora Amamiya voices Kanon Oikawa and Iori Saeki voices Saki Kindaichi, the pair of high schoolers whose slowly growing connection drives the story. The series is being produced at the animation studio CompTown, with Tomoe Makino directing.
Cast and staff
The two leads are the only cast members announced so far:
- Sora Amamiya as Kanon Oikawa
- Iori Saeki as Saki Kindaichi
The confirmed staff list is:
- Original work: Kuzushiro (serialized in Kodansha’s Comic Days)
- Director: Tomoe Makino
- Series composition and script: Shogo Yasukawa
- Character design: Ayumi Nishibata
- Music: jizue
- Animation production: CompTown
Yasukawa is a familiar name in adaptation work, having handled series composition on titles such as Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma and DanMachi. Music duo jizue and character designer Ayumi Nishibata round out a team that leans toward restrained, character-first storytelling rather than action spectacle — a fitting choice for the source material.
What the story is about
The official synopsis frames the series around things that are hard to see. Just before starting high school, Saki Kindaichi meets a striking girl with long, flowing hair — Kanon Oikawa — on her way to a piano lesson. The two meet again at the entrance ceremony, now as classmates.
Kanon is hard of hearing and tends to keep her distance from others. Unsettled by the way some classmates and teachers treat her, Saki feels compelled to reach out. As Kanon begins to let down her guard, a quiet, everyday rhythm brings the two closer, one step at a time.
It is a gentle, character-driven story about two girls, unspoken bonds, and a relationship that takes root gradually. That tone, plus the deafness of one of its leads, gives the series a premise that sets it apart from the busier romance titles in the 2027 pipeline.
Release date and what we still do not know
The 2027 window is confirmed, but the announcement stopped short of naming a month or a season. No streaming platform has been announced either. Given that the trailer arrived roughly a year out, expect those details — plus more of the supporting cast — to surface at a later event or a follow-up key visual.
Why it matters
The Moon on a Rainy Night has built a devoted readership as a slow-burn romance that treats disability and first love with unusual care. An anime adaptation gives that story a much larger audience, and the first trailer is the clearest signal yet that the production is on track for its 2027 slot.
It also lands in a growing wave of romance anime aiming for a more grounded, emotional register. If you follow that side of the lineup, our earlier coverage of Now That We Draw and of Glasses With a Chance of Delinquent shows the same trend across the 2027 calendar.
