Bless Anime’s First Full Trailer Confirms a January 8 Premiere

Bless has a premiere date. The anime's official website posted the first full promotional video and a key visual on Saturday, and the video confirms the series will debut on January 8. It also previews the ending theme, "New Page" by HIKKA.

The date lands in the first full week of the winter season, the same day as the BanG Dream! sequel. Crunchyroll will stream it worldwide outside Japan and China.

The team behind it

A-1 Pictures is animating. Shōtarō Kitamura directs, coming off Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!, a series that had to keep a large cast of girls funny and distinct in the same scene. Takayuki Kikuchi is the assistant director, with episode direction on Solo Leveling and Kaguya-sama: Love is War behind him.

Fukurou Kamiza writes and oversees the scripts after Non Non Biyori Nonstop. Honoka Yokoyama handles both character design and chief animation direction, with credits on Oshi no Ko's second season and Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence. Tetsuya Kawakami and Reina Iwasaki are also chief animation directors, and Ryō Yoshimata, whose work includes Somali and the Forest Spirit and After the Rain, composes the music.

That is a deep bench for a series about modelling. Two chief animation directors plus a third credited on design suggests the production expects a lot of character acting and a lot of faces, which is roughly what the manga demands.

What Bless is about

Yukino Sonoyama's manga follows Aia, who has been told since childhood that she is destined to be a model, and Jun, who has been bullied over her freckles. They end up working together, and the story uses that partnership to ask who gets to decide what counts as beautiful, and what it costs to take that decision back.

Kodansha USA Publishing releases the manga in English and describes it as a fashion manga that questions what it really means to be beautiful, and what it takes to overcome a system that seems to respect talent over hard work. The seventh English volume came out on February 10. Kodansha also runs the series digitally on K MANGA.

Sonoyama launched it in Kodansha's Shonen Magazine Edge in 2022, and it now serializes in Monthly Shonen Sirius. Kodansha shipped the ninth Japanese volume on October 8, and the series has more than 1.25 million copies in circulation.

A rare double adaptation

The manga is also getting a live-action series, which Amazon Prime Video will stream worldwide exclusively in spring 2027. Two adaptations of the same source, running within months of each other, is unusual and not always comfortable for either production. It does mean the story gets two separate audiences, one that watches anime and one that does not, and it puts pressure on the anime to establish its own visual identity before the live-action version arrives.

Where the cast stands

Cast announcements have come out through character videos rather than press releases. Koki Uchiyama and Tarusuke Shingaki are among the names confirmed so far, with Shingaki voicing Hikaru Oya.

The January 8 slot was the last real unknown. What is left is how the show handles the fashion at the centre of it. Modelling stories fail when the clothes look like costumes rather than clothes, and A-1 Pictures now has two months to prove otherwise.
