Mikito Chinen’s horror novel Etsuran Genkin Ryōki Satsujin-han no Seishin Kantei Hōkoku-sho — roughly “Restricted Reading: Psychiatric Evaluation Report of a Bizarre Murderer” — has been adapted into a manga. Artist Hiromoto Komatsu launched the series on Futabasha’s Web Comic Action platform on September 25.
The adaptation brings Chinen’s fascination with forensic psychology and criminal minds into a visual format, following a novel that Futabasha published in September 2025 — meaning the manga has arrived less than a year after the source material.
What the manga is about
The story follows doctor Kasumi Uehara as she conducts the psychiatric examination of the serial killer responsible for the murders of eleven men and women in Tokyo. As the details of the case come to light, so do more questions — and the case draws her toward the darkness at its core.
It is a setup built around interrogation and psychological unwinding rather than action: a single examiner, a single subject, and a widening set of unknowns. That structure suits a web comic format, where tension can be paced chapter by chapter.
Who is involved

Chinen is a prolific mystery author whose work has been flowing steadily into manga and television. With artist Kiyo Hasui, Chinen launched the Prometheus Taisen (Prometheus War) manga on Kadokawa’s ComicWalker platform on June 10. Separately, Chinen and Eri Takenashi concluded the Ameku Nakao no Suiri Karute – Sphere no Shitenshi manga in its third compiled book volume on July 7.
That Ameku project is based on Chinen’s Ameku Takao’s Detective Karte light novel series, which launched in Good! Afternoon in September 2024, with Kodansha publishing the first and second volumes in January and August 2025 respectively.
A source author with a growing adaptation footprint
The Ameku Takao’s Detective Karte novels have already crossed into multiple formats. A television anime of the novels debuted in January 2025, streamed by Crunchyroll as it aired and later given an English dub; Crunchyroll carries the series under the title Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective. The novels also inspired a live-action series adaptation, which premiered in April 2025.
The books themselves have a long publishing history. Shinchosha released 13 volumes of the novel series from October 2014 to September 2022. Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha has since begun re-publishing those 13 volumes and adding three more since October 2023. The series has over 3 million copies in cumulative circulation.
Why it matters
Chinen’s name now anchors a small but consistent ecosystem of medical-mystery and psychological-thriller adaptations, and Etsuran Genkin extends that record into horror. For web comic readers, the appeal is the familiar structure of a sharp professional meeting an unreadable mind — a formula that has worked across Chinen’s translated work and one that a manga adaptation can visualise directly.
Novels being turned into manga is a well-worn route to reaching readers who do not pick up prose, and it is one publishers lean on frequently. Recent examples include Keishi Ayasato’s Seijo Seisen light novels getting a manga adaptation and Hikari adapting Mashimesa Emoto’s ducal heiress story.
No English-language release of the Etsuran Genkin manga has been announced. The series is available in Japan through Futabasha’s Web Comic Action platform.
